Since 2015 Barcelona have transformed the structure of their women’s teams. The number of first-team staff has grown to include roles such as an additional assistant manager, a goalkeepers coach, an analyst, a team delegate, a kit manager, doctors, psychologists and nutritionists.
The academy was also revamped to allocate two coaches per youth team from the under-10s up to the B team, as well as a full set of support staff like the first team.
The women’s section also has a dedicated regional and international scouting department as well as a sports science team.
The football management, scouting, playing methodology, sports science and academy departments replicate the men’s model, with the same facilities.
Barcelona did not want to invest a lot of money in the world’s best signings. Instead, their philosophy was to invest in their first-team and academy players.
They believe the future lies in the success of their academy and are giving opportunities to the players it produces and reaping the rewards.
